Be cautious about what not to do with an autistic child

Are you scared of getting harsh while handling your autistic child?

Having an autistic child and you are confused in your mind about how to behave with him or how to teach him.

It is very normal, as autistic children are always very difficult to handle.

This small blog will help you in learning what to avoid in teaching, behaving, and handling these special children with utmost care

Let us know the story of James who avoided several activities to keep his autistic child calm and stress-free

James was very worried when his only child Romi was diagnosed with autism. He was not sure how to handle his autistic child.

His child was getting restless and was very hyperactive. He did not like to eat and did repetitive actions like moving his hands again and again.

James was very patient and he spent 1 hour every day to make his child finish his lunch. He never scolded his son for playing with his food.

James never went to parties leaving his son alone. He ensured that somebody stayed with his son.

James used to make his instructions easily understandable to his child by making nice visuals and images.

But, he was looking for a permanent cure for autism.

James realized that stem cell treatment could be a great option and he started exploring it.

While he was exploring stem cell treatment in India, he also equipped himself with the knowledge of what not to do with an autistic child.

Here are some of the things to keep in mind while dealing with an autistic child:

11 Things Not To Do With An Autistic Child

1. Refrain from pressurizing your child with complicated tasks

Your autistic child may not always understand what you tell him. You may verbally instruct him to do some work- like throwing away the waste in the dustbin. But, he may not understand that. Instead, use a visual to make him comprehend that when the dustbin is full it should be thrown away.

2. Do not compromise on the needs of the autistic child

You may go out to parties. But your child needs time to play and take proper rest after that. Remember to first fulfill your child’s needs and then go out for parties.

3. Do not always prevent repetitive behavior or stimming

An autistic child does repetitive behavior and tries to cope with the environment and manage stress. Although repetitive behavior is not a good symptom, preventing your child from always doing repetitive behavior will put a lot of stress on your child and he may shut himself down and not do further activities.

4. Do not supervise them too much or too little

Try to take care of your autistic child, so that they do not start playing with electric cords and consume any medicine. But, at the same time allow him to play in the living room. Remember that your child needs his own space.

5.  Do not use only one learning technique

It is difficult to teach an autistic child just by verbal communication. If you want him to remember the name of the animals, take him to an animal farm or zoo where he can feel the presence of the animal and learn their names too.

6. Do not be too harsh when your child is struggling

Never scold your child or be impatient with him when he is struggling to learn something. You have to understand that your child is very special and he may break down completely if you scold him. Very gently, tell him the sequences he should follow in doing the activities and what he should not do at all.

7. Do not force your child to eat food when he does not want

Your child may play with the food and may not want to eat it. If you reward or punish him to complete eating his food, he will think that it is because of the food, he gets your love and he will try to eat the food forcibly. This may damage his health.

8. Do not have difficult conversations with them

Autistic children may not understand difficult words or phrases. So, having a conversation with them with difficult words will make them feel helpless, as they won’t understand your thought. The best way to communicate with your autistic child is to keep the conversation direct and very simple.

9. Do not assume all autistic children are the same

Your child is very special to you. He has specific needs like playing with toys of his choice, eating food that he likes, listening, and viewing themes according to his taste. Remember that every autistic child is different and he needs special attention from you.

10. Do not assume, they are not paying attention

Autistic children pay attention to what you tell them. You have to talk to them in an easy language and in a very simple way. They will definitely understand your thoughts and reciprocate the feelings in their own way.

11. Do not force eye contact

Autistic children do not make eye contact. Do not force them to look at you while speaking to them, Be very kind to them and love them from your heart. They live in their own world but listen to what you say.

Conclusion :

Autistic children need your attention, love, and your unique communication skills. Always remember what not to do with an autistic child. Autism is a disease that may not get cured easily without a special therapeutic approach.
