Here’s one of our success stories to uplift your mood further.

Paula from Nigeria, found herself battling the relentless pain of osteoarthritis  (OA)  in her hips. The pain had become excruciating, making even simple daily tasks a painful ordeal.

She tried all treatments for OA but everything failed.

One of her friends told her about MedicoExperts, a renowned medical service from India that specializes in connecting patients with top-quality healthcare options at reasonable costs.

Paula decided to take a chance and attend one of MedicoExperts’ OPD camps in her area. She provided her medical history and reports, and our team at MedicoExperts quickly got to work. They evaluated her condition and discussed various treatment options, keeping in mind her budget constraints.

The doctors told her that OA happens when the cartilage around the hips wears down. They also told her that as all other treatment options have failed to treat her pain, she needs to undergo surgery.

With the guidance of our team, Paula consulted with our highly skilled orthopedic surgeon. She was initially apprehensive but was reassured by the surgeon’s impressive success rates and the hospital’s reputation for quality care.

With our team’s support, Paula underwent the hip surgery successfully. The procedure was a turning point in her life. She gradually regained her mobility, and the pain that had plagued her for so long started to fade away.

Different types of orthopedic surgeries that will be available in Cameroon

We have successfully treated more than 1000 people through our surgical camps in other African countries and we are planning to do the same in Cameroon.

MedicoExperts’ team of Indian super specialists and orthopedic surgeons will visit Cameroon to perform a number of orthopedic surgeries to ensure that Cameroonians get the best of the world healthcare facilities without traveling to a foreign land.

Our team will help local hospitals upgrade the existing infrastructure and acquire the skills to perform such surgeries successfully. The team will also make sure that the local doctors are well-trained to take care of the patients after the surgery or during the post-surgery period.

Here are the orthopedic surgeries that will be available for Cameroonians at a very reasonable cost in their country and by some of the world-renowned surgeons:

Total Knee Replacement:

Total knee replacement surgery, also known as total knee arthroplasty (TKA), is a surgical procedure designed to relieve pain and restore functionality in people suffering from severe knee joint damage or degeneration.

This damage is often due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or injury. The surgery involves the removal of damaged cartilage and bone from the knee joint and replaces it with artificial components to create a new, smooth joint surface.

The procedure usually starts with the patient under general or regional anesthesia to ensure they are pain-free and comfortable throughout.

The surgeon then makes an incision over the knee, exposing the joint. The damaged portions of the knee joint, including the ends of the thigh and shin bones and any affected cartilage, are carefully removed.

Next, they shape the remaining bone to accommodate the artificial knee components. These components consist of metal implants for the ends of the bones and a plastic spacer to act as the cushioning surface in between.

Once the components are securely in place, the surgeon tests the knee’s range of motion, ensuring proper alignment and stability. Then they close the incision and monitor the patient during the recovery period, which may involve physical therapy to help regain strength and mobility in the knee.

Total knee replacement surgery can significantly improve a patient’s health by reducing pain and enhancing joint function, allowing them to enjoy a more active and pain-free lifestyle.

Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery or total hip arthroplasty (THA), is a surgical procedure aimed at relieving pain and improving mobility in individuals who suffer from severe hip joint damage.

Conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, hip fractures, or other hip joint disorders can cause this damage. Like knee replacement surgery, this procedure involves removing the damaged parts of the hip joint and replacing them with artificial components to create a new, functional joint.

Like most surgical procedures, hip replacement surgery starts with the patient receiving general or regional anesthesia, as per the patient’s condition. The surgeon then makes an incision over the hip joint, exposing the damaged joint surfaces. The damaged portions of the hip socket (acetabulum) and the femur’s head (thigh bone) are carefully removed.

The surgeon shapes the remaining bone to accommodate the artificial hip components, which usually consist of a metal cup to replace the acetabulum and a metal stem with a ball-shaped head to replace the femur’s head. These components are securely fitted in place, and the surgeon checks the hip’s stability and range of motion.

The incision is then closed, and the patient undergoes a recovery period that may involve physical therapy to regain strength and mobility in the hip.

ACL & PCL  Surgery

ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament) surgeries are specialized procedures that focus on repairing or reconstructing the ligaments within the knee joint.

These ligaments play crucial roles in stabilizing the knee and maintaining its function. When these ligaments are damaged due to injury or trauma, surgical intervention may be necessary to restore stability and prevent long-term joint problems.

In ACL surgery, the surgeon typically begins by making small incisions around the knee joint. They then assess the extent of the ACL injury and decide whether to repair the damaged ligament or perform a reconstruction using a graft (usually from the patient’s own tissue or a donor).

If you choose reconstruction, the surgeon drills tunnels into the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia) to place the graft, securing it with screws or other fixation devices. Post-operative rehabilitation is essential to regain strength, stability, and range of motion in the knee.

Other Knee Surgeries

Following are some other knee surgeries that we are planning to include in our surgical camps:

This procedure is used for individuals experiencing knee pain and swelling, which can be indicative of a meniscus tear. The meniscus is a wedge-shaped cartilage structure located within the knee, specifically resting on the tibia (the inner and larger of the two bones between the knee and the ankle), and it serves as a critical shock absorber.

During a meniscectomy, a segment of the torn meniscus is surgically removed using arthroscopy ( a surgical procedure orthopedic surgeons use to visualize the treatment problems inside a joint). This minimally invasive technique involves making small incisions around the knee, through which a tiny camera and specialized tools are inserted to perform the surgery safely and effectively.

When a meniscus tear happens in an area with improved blood circulation, a doctor might choose to perform an arthroscopic repair procedure. This approach can offer advantages to the patient by preserving the meniscus tissue, reducing the potential for future arthritis development. However, it’s important to note that the recovery period for this method is usually extended.

A meniscus transplant is done when someone has their whole meniscus taken out but still suffers from knee pain. During the procedure, a donor’s meniscus is placed in the patient’s knee, and arthroscopy is used for this operation.

The plica is a piece of tissue that remains from fetal development. While it usually disappears naturally, sometimes it lingers. If non-surgical treatments for plica irritation don’t work, arthroscopy can be used to remove the extra plica from the knee.

Microfracture is a procedure used for minor cartilage damage in the knee. Its limitation lies in addressing only a small portion of the damaged area. Since the healing process for cartilage is distinct from regular joint cartilage, there is a potential for pain and enduring damage.

This surgical method involves taking out the tissue on the outer side of the knee responsible for stabilizing the kneecap (patella). When the lateral retinaculum (the fibrous tissue on the lateral or outer side of the kneecap or patella)) is overly tight, it can pull the patella sideways and lead to discomfort. If the pain persists, the physician may opt to release the lateral retinaculum to enhance the proper alignment of the patella.

The quadriceps or patellar tendon is the tendon in the knee that’s most frequently repaired. These tendons cross through the knee joint, although they do so in slightly distinct locations. People with complete patellar tendon tears require this surgery. Usually, this kind of procedure involves an open approach, resulting in a scar along the front of the knee.

A knee arthrotomy is a surgical procedure used to examine the knee joint. During this procedure, the surgeon exposes and examines the tissues by creating an opening in the joint capsule. If any fragments are found during the knee arthrotomy, they can be removed, and if needed, the joint can be irrigated or cleansed. In cases of infection, such measures may be necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions and patient concerns:

Is orthopedic surgery safe?

Orthopedic surgery is generally safe when performed by skilled and experienced surgeons. Like any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, such as infection, bleeding, or adverse reactions to anesthesia. Patients should discuss these risks with their surgeon before surgery.

What is the recovery process like after orthopedic surgery?

The recovery process varies depending on the type of surgery performed. It typically involves physical therapy, pain management, and gradual rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility. Recovery times can range from weeks to months.

Are there non-surgical alternatives to orthopedic surgery?

Yes, non-surgical treatments are often considered first. These may include physical therapy, medications, lifestyle modifications, and injections like corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid for joint conditions.

Which surgery hurts the most?

The level of pain experienced after surgery can vary widely depending on various factors, including the individual’s pain threshold, the type of surgery, and the surgical approach used. It’s challenging to definitively state which surgery hurts the most, as pain is subjective and can differ greatly from person to person.

However, some surgical procedures tend to be associated with more significant post-operative pain due to their nature or invasiveness. For example:

Joint replacement surgeries, such as hip or knee replacements, can be quite painful in the initial days after surgery.
